SESA 2011 - Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Can the processor that has to be designed be from any of the following categories? And is it Mandatory ? a) Super Computing b) Audio / Video Processing c) Networking - Traffic Cryptography; Network Traffic Packet Inspection; Wireless(LTE)CODECs

Response: These are the categories, you may pick the most appropriate category

Question: Can the processor that has to be designed be based on any architecture? ( for example say, MIPS Architecture)

Response: It should be original architecture. You may use DLX architecture as the base.

Question: What is an SMDL Processor Model ?

Response: An SMDL Processor Model is an ISA model of a processor architecture in SMDL. A complete SMDL tutorial and reference along with samples for DLX processor are available. This information will be sent to you as soon as you sign and return the registration agreement.

Question: How is our processor design being evaluated? And what are the design criteria ?

Response: You are expected to identify an application for which the processor is being designed. As part of your submission, along with SMDL model, you have to provide a short description of problem being solved, pseudo / C code for the kernel function (the hot code or inner loops) of your application and the corresponding assembly code. Based on the assembly code and how efficiently it solves the problem that you have identified your design will be evaluated.

Question: Is it mandatory that I use the tools given by Sankhya for the design of my processor or can i use any tool that I am much familiar with? ( For example say, CADENCE).

Response: It is not mandatory to use Teraptor.

Question: Would like to know if there are any attachments that i have to send with my Registration Terms and Conditions Agreement form?

Response: As per the agreement yes. Once you receive your order-id, you can request for evaluation edition of Teraptor for a 90-day period, the same will be treated as one attachment. You should also send a bonafide student certificate from your college or university. In addition, an incubation agreement will have to be signed by winners and runners-up that want to take advantage of incubation support.

Question: What is Order-id

Response: Order-id is necessary to register and obtain a license for Teraptor from License Request Form

Question: What is Incubation Agreement

Response: Winners of the contest will have the option to take advantage of incubation support as per terms of the contract. Incubation Agreement outlines the terms and conditions of incubation support.

Question: What is the mechanism of obtaining the problem for which we are to create and present the solution during the competition ?

Response: After the completion of registration process, you will be provided with Order-ID with which you can download teraptor evaluation edition through our website. Then you are expected to identify an application for which the processor is being designed.

Question: There are currently 4 students under the MS-SDE program.Whether 4 of the MS-SDE together can form a team and participate in the competition ?

Response: Yes, all 4 of you can form a team and participate in the contest. Or if you have individual ideas on the categories provided in the website all 4 of you can register individually.

Question: If 4 of us can participate as a team then will it be enough for only one person in the team , to register on behalf of the rest whereby the rest of the members can be listed as team members ?

Response: It is sufficient for a single person to register on behalf of the team of 4 and the rest can be included in the members list. However, all team members must sign the registration agreement.

Question: Documents to be returned to SESA

Response: Signed registration agreement, Bonafide student certificate
